Structure Idea: Hyperspace Inhibitor.

Postby Soban » Sun Sep 02, 2012 6:23 am

Ever get tired of the AI running away when it wants to move further into your star system?
you have to cheese it after him again, leaving your front lines for the most part, totally undefended.

In sci-fi, gravity wells are known for their ability to horribly disrupt hyperspace / ftl / warp travel, most games have a gravity well area around systems, or a method with which to halt advancing fleets - or at least slow them down by forcing them to fight system to system, in some games - forcing a ship into hyperspace while there is a gravity well present will destroy the ship.

So, heres my idea; (well, i stole it from another game, but pretty much every space RTS has something similar)

- Hyperspace Inhibitor Turret / platform.
- Unarmed
- Lightly Armored structure, either placed by a base structure itself - or to give constructors more use in late game, by a construction ship. (or even as an addon to bases)
- Could be tied into the hyperspace engine research tier as an unlock gained by researching the range increase.
- Prevents enemy ships from leaving the area via hyperspace until destroyed, OR severely reduces the charge rate of a ships hyperspace reactor.
- Blocks attempts to bypass front-line defenses by: forcing the enemy ships to exit hyperspace either in the closest system without an Inhibitor, or the forces them to exit in a hostile front line system. (ie the system where the inhibitor is placed)
- Once destroyed the gravity well dissipates and ships can hyperspace unhindered.
- Does not affect friendly units.

Unit Info: (numbers may need to be tweaked)
HP: 75-150 (estimated)
Shields: 0 (The gravity well generator either consumes all the power the station provides, is too big for the station to use a shield generator, or the gravity field makes it impossible to form a stable shield around the platform)
Cost: 3000-4000+ (Estimated) this is an end-game thing, so lets make it expensive.

"Generates a gravity well in local space, preventing enemy ships from retreating into hyperspace until the Platform is destroyed, if enemy ships attempt to bypass this gravity well - they will be forced out of hyperspace in the closest system that does not possess a hostile inhibitor, or they will exit in this system."

Technology info:
Name: Hyperspace Inhibitor
Requires: Hyperspace Range extension.
Cost: 15,000.

This technology allows the construction of Gravity Well Generators in systems with a friendly starbase, although lightly armored - this platform generates a powerful gravity field forcing enemy ships to destroy this structure to proceed further into enemy territory.

It could also be an "upgrade" that is purchased for Military / mining bases - brought from the unit, not from the research screen, otherwise it would be too easy to obtain.

It's not a bad idea, at least for Humans.
The Gark Battleship already has a hyperspace inhibitor ability that when used prevents others ships to enter hyperspace (they will be able to jump eventually as all that ability does is reset the hyperspace recharge value).
We'll think about it 8-)

i havnt gotten to the Gark yet, was trying to finish a match as the Alliance - i prefer their ship designs to the USF, at least, certainly the destroyer and cruiser. :P
